Values and sustainability

At Pohjolan Pirtti & Kievari, sustainability is an essential part of everyday life and guides all our choices. Our work is grounded in respect for nature, local traditions, and the preservation of cultural heritage. We are committed to acting responsibly today so that Pohjola and Kuusamo’s unique environment can be preserved for future generations.

Our Values

At Pohjolan Pirtti & Kievari, we cherish our environment and aim through our work to take care of the nature that surrounds us. We favour local solutions, avoid disposability, and make use of existing resources as far as possible instead of acquiring new ones.

Responsibility is visible in our everyday life in both small and large choices. Our aim is to act with respect for both nature and future generations.

Preserving cultural heritage

Vuotunki is one of the oldest villages in the Kuusamo region and one of the few villages in northern Finland that were spared from destruction during the Lapland War. Places like this are rare, which is why their preservation is especially important to us.

We have a strong commitment to safeguarding these irreplaceable treasures for future generations. We are dedicated to caring for culturally and historically valuable buildings,  rural landscapes, and the biodiversity of our surrounding outdoor areas.

The preservation and presentation of cultural heritage and historical values lie at the heart of our work. We use our buildings and environment responsibly and highlight the unique history and traditions of the Pohjola estate and the Kuusamo region through our services.

Local wild food from Kuusamo

We favour local and Finnish ingredients and producers in whenever possible. By doing so, we support the Kuusamo region and ensure that we can offer our guests high-quality dining experiences.

Our restaurant’s food philosophy is largely built around local and wild food. We want to know where the food we serve comes from and who has produced, caught or foraged it. We are always happy to share the origins of our ingredients and the stories behind our dishes with our guests.

We also place strong emphasis on high-quality vegetarian and vegan cuisine, and our goal is to continue increasing the range of plant-based options alongside local game and fish.

Food waste

Our goal is to keep food waste as close to zero as possible every day. We carefully plan food quantities to match the expected number of guests, ensuring there is enough for everyone without unnecessary surplus. Any excess food is used for staff meals. It is important to us that none of the valuable, pure local ingredients or any other food go to waste.

Future

Nordic Holiday Services Oy / Pohjolan Pirtti & Kievari carried out a development project between April 16, 2024, and February 27, 2025, in collaboration with FCG Finnish Consulting Group Oy, resulting in a business plan for the next ten years. The primary objective of the plan is to develop the business into a year-round operation and extend customer stays by diversifying accommodation options and service offerings.

As part of the project, a comprehensive development plan (master plan) was created, addressing accommodation and other construction, land use requirements, service content, access routes, lighting, and the placement of various functions. The plan also places strong emphasis on service design.

The project was implemented with development funding granted by the North Ostrobothnia ELY Centre and co-financed by the European Union.
